Montrose Senator Tripp Pittman kills 2009 Smoke-Free Bill

On April 2, SB130 came up for consideration by the Senate. As you know, SB130, as introduced, would make virtually all workplaces in Alabama smoke-free, including bars and restaurants.  The bill is sponsored by Vivian Figures, Senator from Mobile.

Unfortunately, three amendments were added to the bill that essentially makes it worthless from a public health perspective.   Tripp Pittman (R), Senator from Montrose, Alabama, proposed two of the amendments to gut the legislation.  Pittman has a long history of fighting the public health initiative in the State of Alabama, despite overwhelming support for the initiative in both his hometown of Fairhope, Alabama, and in Baldwin County, Alabama.

In summary, the amendments would allow exemptions for bars and most restaurants. Because food and bar service workers are at highest risk because of their prolonged exposure to secondhand smoke in their workplaces, SB130 as amended is worthless legislation.

Featured Non-Profit of the Month - Wildlife Sanctuary of NWFL

Situation: "We just rescued a stranded cormorant bird off the Mobile bayway bridge. His wing is broken.  What do I do?"  This situation actually happened to James Dorgan several months ago.  The answer is Wildlife Sanctuary of Northwest Florida, a sanctuary for wild animals located in Pensacola, Florida. The wildlife sanctuary receives injured or abandoned wild animals, rehabilitates them, and then releases them. If the wild animal is permanently disabled, the sanctuary provides them a lifelong safe habitat.  The sanctuary also provides terrific guided tours, wildlife awareness programs, and other earth friendly events.  Wild animals may be dropped off at the sanctuary during regular busines hours, and at other locations after hours.  Recent rehabilitated animals include a vulture, owl, hawk, fox, rabbit, turtle, racoon, bat, squirrel, pelican, beaver, alligator, and an eagle.

An Excerpt from President Obama's Notre Dame Commencement Speech:

"The soldier and the lawyer may both love this country with equal passion, and yet reach very different conclusions on the specific steps needed to protect us from harm. The gay activist and the evangelical pastor may both deplore the ravages of HIV/AIDS, but find themselves unable to bridge the cultural divide that might unite their efforts. Those who speak out against stem cell research may be rooted in an admirable conviction about the sacredness of life, but so are the parents of a child with juvenile diabetes who are convinced that their son's or daughter's hardships can be relieved. (Applause.)

  • Obama's day at Notre Dame
The question, then -- the question then is how do we work through these conflicts? Is it possible for us to join hands in common effort? As citizens of a vibrant and varied democracy, how do we engage in vigorous debate? How does each of us remain firm in our principles, and fight for what we consider right, without, as Father John said, demonizing those with just as strongly held convictions on the other side?"
